All Porcelain Crowns (Caps)
Crowns can be installed to correct a variety of deficiencies in your smile like teeth that are crooked, chipped, eroded, unevenly spaced, cracked or discolored. While offering many different types of crowns to her patients, Dr. Lisa Kederian recommends zirconium or alumina crowns, especially for front teeth, due to their perfect look and durability.
Procera is the brand name of the crowns used by Dr. Kederian and her staff because they're widely-known as being one of the most durable and natural-looking crowns available. When installed, people can't tell which teeth are natural and which ones have a Procera crown overtop of them. The Procera brand name means you'll get all-white and incredibly sturdy crowns. They make their crowns by using a ceramic inner lining instead of the normal metal base that shows up as a metallic ring around the gums. Additionally, Procera makes their crowns with a true porcelain outer layer, which makes them look, feel, and act like real teeth.
Procera crowns are made in two different materials, alumina and zirconium, and Dr. Kederian can advise you one which crown is right for you. Crowns made of alumina tend to look more like natural teeth because the material appears translucent. This type of material allows some light to pass through the surface of the crown, which gives it a pearl-like opalescence.
Even though the alumina crown looks very natural, since it allows some light to pass, it may not be perfect in all instances, like hiding a discolored tooth. In a case like this, alumina may allow the light passing through the surface to reflect back the darker color of the tooth underneath, making the new crown look discolored as well. In these situations, Zirconia crowns made by Procera are probably the better choice. Zirconium is more opaque than alumina, which means it will do a better job of hiding discolored teeth. Also, zirconium is a much more durable than alumina, making it a great choice for molars and bridges.
Procera Alumina and Procera Zirconia are both very popular crown materials, since they contain no metal underlayment, and their translucence allows them to look just like a natural tooth. For durable and aesthetic crowns, Procera Zirconia and Procera Alumina are the best possible choices, since either will blend in with your existing teeth, and no one will know the difference.
