              Composite Fillings

Composite fillings are the modern alternative to amalgam for repairing teeth that have been damaged or neglected, since it can be colored to match the existing teeth. The damaged part of the existing tooth will first be stabilized, and then the composite filling inserted.

Several different types of materials for filling teeth are now available, and each have pros and cons. You should discuss the best option for you with your dentist. Composite fillings and amalgam are still the top choices for fillings. Since composites can be colored to match the existing teeth, they are visually more attractive and are best to use when the damaged area will be visible.

Like any filling, composites are not permanent, and will eventually need to be removed and replaced. The material is very tough though, and will serve you for many years to maintain your smile.

Some of the reasons patients choose composite fillings for repair are to fix:

                - Chips in teeth
                - Decayed areas
                - Teeth that are badly worn
                - Teeth that are cracked or broken
                - A gap between two teeth

How do I go about getting a composite filling?

Like other fillings, composite fillings are usually done at the same time any other repair work is done on the tooth. If necessary, decayed areas will be drilled out, or damaged areas prepped to hold the new filling. Before installing the composite filling, the dentist will ensure that the area is fully prepared and cleaned. If there was decay in the tooth around the area of the nerves, the dentist will also insert special medicine. The filling material will then be installed and shaped to return your tooth to full functionality.

When the filling is first placed, the patient may have a heightened sensitivity to temperature variations in food, but this will go away over time as the tooth adjusts to the filling.

Before you leave the dentist's office, you will be given a list of things to do to care for your new filling. Similar to other dental procedures, the best way to care for your new filling will be through proper oral hygiene, a healthy diet, and checkups at regular intervals.
