Cavities in teeth start slowly, and may be hard to notice at first. Catching a cavity when it's small is the best time, since the main body of the tooth is still whole and structurally sound. This is one great reason to visit Dr. Kederian on a regularly-scheduled basis, so she can locate and repair cavities in their early stages, and look for other areas of concern.

In the good-old days of dentistry, silver and amalgam fillings were the only types of inexpensive materials that could be used to fill in a cavity. This material was tough but ugly to look at, if a front tooth was repaired the filling left the whole tooth looking pale grey instead of white. Fortunately, cosmetic dentists like Dr. Kederian can take advantage of strong, new composite materials, colored to match the existing tooth and seem almost invisible.

People who grew up with the silver fillings are now going back to their local cosmetic dentist to have them replaced with natural-looking white filling materials. Aside from looking better, composite fillings don't contain the hazardous metals found in amalgam, such as mercury. There has been a long-running debate as to whether or not amalgam fillings are detrimental to the patient's health. The current conclusion is that mercury in amalgam is not a safety concern and have no ill effects on the body. But Dr. Kederian can help you avoid all the worry and waffling over the subject by removing the ugly silver fillings and installing mercury-free, composite fillings, so her patients can rest and ease and forget about mercury in their mouths.

The composite material used for fillings today is resin-based, designed to bond to the natural structure of the tooth. Because of this, Dr. Kederian can err on the side of conservatism, removing less material from the tooth and leaving more of its natural strength and structure.  When dentists used amalgam, not only did the cavity have to be removed, but so did a portion of the good tooth to ensure a good bonding surface. Now, only the decay must be removed from the tooth, requiring less drilling. It is actually possible to get a cavity fixed without pain and without anesthesia. An additional advantage of composite filling material is that it can be cured quickly using a special light, and the patient can leave the dentist's office will full functionality of his teeth.

Talk to Dr. Kederian about composite fillings if you think you may be getting a cavity, or you just want to get the old silver fillings out of your mouth. The whole process is fast and pain-free, and gives you back a natural-looking gorgeous smile.
