              Fixed Bridges

Dental bridges are fixed in place and are used when several teeth are missing side by side.

Bridges come in several different types.

You should discuss your options with your dentist to figure out which type is the right one for you. The most popular type is made of metal with an overlayment of porcelain, and is known as a traditional bridge. Using a bridge like this requires that there be sturdy teeth on each side of the area to be bridged, because they will need to be crowned to affix the bridge to.

Bridges are very strong and will last for a long time, but may need to eventually be replaced or cemented back down due to wear.

Fixed bridges are used for the following reasons:

                - To fill in a space where teeth are missing
                - To maintain facial structure
                - To hold remaining teeth in place to keep them from moving
                - To replace an old partial denture
                - To allow for proper chewing and speaking again

What's involved in installing a fixed dental bridge?

Having a bridge installed requires at least two visits to the dentist's office, maybe more. During the first visit, the dentist will numb the area and grind down the two anchoring teeth on either side of the bridge to prepare them to receive crowns. Then, very accurate molds of your mouth will be made and sent off to a lab to build the bridge. Finally, the dentist will fit and install a temporary bridge to wear while the permanent bridge is made.

The second visit will occur after your permanent bridge is made, and will consist of installing it, checking and adjusting it. The dentist may only put temporary cement on the bridge to hold it in place to see how the teeth and gums get used to the new device. Once the dentist is assured of a firm, proper, and exact fit, he will permanently cement the bridge in place.

The dentist will provide you with instructions when the bridge is properly installed. Since the bridge is permanent, normal oral hygiene and regular dental visits will be all that's required to maintain your new bridge.
