Maintenance
Plaque that is not removed from the surface of the tooth can turn to tartar in twenty-four hours. Good oral hygiene such as brushing and flossing will help control plaque deposits and tartar formation, but there are still plenty of difficult areas to reach that will require the attention of a professional.
If you go in for a periodontal treatment, your dentist will likely suggest that you have regular cleanings done every three months. During these checkups, the dentist will check the depth of the tooth pockets to make sure there are no signs of periodontal disease. Also during these visits, the plaque and tartar that you can't reach by regular cleaning will be removed around the gum line by the hygienist.
Your scheduled appointment will not only include an evaluation and periodontal cleaning, but will probably also include:
- X-rays. These are taken and examined carefully for any signs of tumors, cysts, or bone loss that cannot otherwise be seen during an exam. - A check on the condition of existing dental refurbishments, including fillings, crowns, and implants - A detail check for any signs of tooth decay - A screening to look for signs of oral cancer. All of the soft tissues in and around the mouth will be inspected for signs of the disease. - A determination of how good of a job you're doing maintaining your teeth between visits, and a recommendation for any new devices that may help you in your efforts. - Polish. The hygienist will polish your teeth at the end of your visit to remove any remaining tartar and plaque that was missed during the cleaning, and will also help remove stains from your teeth.
It is essential that you sustain a routine of proper oral hygiene and regular periodontal cleanings to keep periodontal disease in check!
